Featured Series Arizona economy State of Arizona's Economy
An "Arizona Illustrated" Special. Friday, Jan. 29 at 9:00 pm. on PBS-HD, Channel 6

Southern Arizona's news magazine will feature two leading economic advisors giving their assessment of the state of Arizona’s economy, a panel of journalists from the region and questions from viewers on where state is headed economically.

Guests for this program are University of Arizona Economists Marshall J. Vest and Gerald Swanson. Vest is director of the Economic and Business Research Center at the University of Arizona, and is a leading authority on Arizona’s economy. He has consulted both the governor and Arizona lawmakers on economic issues. Swanson is professor of economics for the Thomas R. Brown Chair in Economic Education at the University of Arizona Eller College of Management.

Arizona Illustrated host Bill Buckmaster is joined by Mark Evans of TucsonCitizen.com and Linda Valdez of the Arizona Republic to query guests about the current financial condition of one of the fastest growing states in the union. Viewers are encouraged to submit their questions about the state of Arizona's economy -- where it has been historically and where it is today -- to azillustrated@azpublicmedia.org . The deadline for submitting questions for The State of Arizona's Economy special is noon on Thursday, January 28.

Monday It’s been more than two weeks since a huge earthquake hit Haiti and as Tony Paniagua reports, local residents continue to open their hearts and wallets to help the victims. Pam White reports that scientists continue to monitor the San Andreas fault in this county and we’ll have an update on the tsunami, which ripped across Asia five years ago, from a U of A Professor who just returned from Sri Lanka.

Tuesday: Kimberly Craft reports on efforts to slow the rate of Native Americans who drop out of high school. Terry Bracy and Ellen Wheeler of the Udall Foundation speak with host Bill Buckmaster about how their organization is doing during the economic downturn. Pam White reports on changes taking place at Biosphere 2 since the U of A took over the facility.

Wednesday: This weekend is the 3rd annual "Beat Back Buffelgrass Day," and as Pam White reports, a local scientist is trying to find a solution to the problem. Ramon Valadez, the new Chairman of the Pima County Board of Supervisors, talks with Bill Buckmaster about his new role. Tony Paniagua takes us on a tour of Civano.

Thursday: State Lawmakers have been in session for almost a month now working on a new budget. Christopher Conover will bring us up to date on their progess so far. Political commentators Bruce Ash and Paul Eckerstrom join Bill Buckmaster for the monthly face Off and Luis Carrion wraps up his series on the growing number of Tucson coffee houses.
