A Treasury of Retablos
15th-century Spanish artistry on full display at the Museum of Art
From Arizona Illustrated
For more than 350 years, religious-themed panel paintings—called by scholars some of the most beautiful and iconographically ambitious of the 15th century—adorned an altar at a cathedral in west central Spain.
The Napoleonic wars damaged many of the paintings, but the surviving 26 panels have found a welcome home at The University of Arizona Museum of Art.
