View Video Mariachi Math Preparing for college with music and math

Taking math courses beyond Algebra 1 is currently one of the biggest obstacles nationally for students to become college ready. The Tucson GEAR UP Project's Math through Mariachi Program is built on the connections between musical study and mathematics achievement.

Professional mariachis, who are University of Arizona and Pima community college students, serve as instructors and relate math to playing and reading mariachi music. All lessons are aligned with state academic standards for mathematics. The incoming 9th graders attending the summer math through mariachi program participate in algebra lessons, music workshops, and study skills activities to better prepare them for high school and college.

Producer Luis Carrion Brings us this look at this innovative outreach program for the University of Arizona.
