Earth Fissures
Groundwater pumped faster than it can be recharged
From Arizona Illustrated
When groundwater is pumped out faster than it can be recharged the surface of the earth sinks in causing cracks in the earth or earth fissures. After a heavy rainfall these fissures can open up and become huge gullies which can be hazardous for housing developments.
The Arizona Geologic Survey as mandated by the state is now mapping all the major earth fissures in the state and making the information available to the public on a website address soon to be announced.
