Sea of Cortez: Then and Now

In this land of enhanced biodiversity, two different worlds come together –the terrestrial and the marine. On land, visit with the locals whose grassroots conservation efforts have helped revive the local sea turtle population. On the beach, wade through the one of the area’s many tide pools to get up close and personal with sea cucumbers, flat worms, serpent stars, and sea anemones, just to name a few of the pool’s many species. On the water, the bottlenose dolphins come along for a tour of the areas numerous islands
Navigating a Desert Island

The islands in the Sea of Cortez are pieces of debris that display the violent history of Baja California. In this episode, travel along the coastline of Espiritu Santo Island on a personal kayak to visit the extremely vocal sea lions and navigate the ruin-like canals around the island that were created in the early 20th century for the pearl oyster trade. On the island, cross paths with an enormous pack of fiddler crabs on their way to the ocean and observe a completely new species of beetle.
Marine Sanctuary: Preserving Desert Life

Loreto Marine Park was established in 1996 to preserve the delicate ecosystems in the Sea of Cortez. Catalina Island, a biological reserve in the park, is home to terrestrial plants and animals that have been so physically isolated that they have isolated themselves genetically – they are new species. Here you can find a rattlesnake with no rattle to warn its prey of a potential attack and encounter a barrel cactus over ten feet tall.
Finding the Fault in California’s Desert
Sunday, November 23rd 6:30pm and Thursday, November 27th 8pm
Travel to Southern California to walk along the San Andreas Fault and examine some of the unique topography created by the fault. This episode also examines some of the many ways people are harnessing the forms of energy from the San Andreas Fault. Then take a trip by helicopter to see how green vegetation has sprung up all along the fault line.

Host David Yetman takes viewers on another round of bold explorations when The Desert Speaks returns for a spectacular 18th season. Through intriguing storytelling and stunning photography, viewers find out about the people (past and present), plants, animals and archaeology of arid regions throughout the New World.
David Yetman is a research scientist at the University of Arizona's Southwest Center and is a nationally known author and accomplished photographer who specializes in the plants, geography and people of northwestern Mexico. Using boats, bikes and burros, Yetman takes viewers from Bolivia to Baja California, bringing his boundless enthusiasm, energy and knowledge to the series.
