Riina, heedless of Binnu’s requests for moderation, savagely wipes out any opposition and when Apuzzo, one of the old guard bosses, contacts Buscetta, worried about the turn which the business is taking after the latest deaths decreed by Totò – the member of parliament Pio La Torre, the prefect Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa and the judge Rocco Chinnici – arranges for him to be eliminated and also wipes out the Buscetta clan and all its affiliates, dissolving their bodies in acid. In the meantime, Biagio unexpectedly receives a visit from Mangano, now in retirement, who, aware of his experience of the Corleonesi, places him in contact with the judges Falcone and Borsellino, who, co-ordinated by the Judge Caponnetto, have set up an anti-mafia pool.`
