Episode 20 of 5 :  Corleone - Episode 5

It is the 1980s. Totò Riina is by now the undisputed head of Cosa Nostra and the new Commission is peopled by his faithful followers alone: Michele Greco, Brusca, Di Maio and naturally Binnu Provenzano. Riina, heedless of Binnu’s requests for moderation, savagely wipes out any opposition and when Apuzzo, one of the old guard bosses, contacts Buscetta, worried about the turn which the business is taking after the latest deaths decreed by Totò – the member of parliament Pio La Torre, the prefect Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa and the judge Rocco Chinnici – arranges for him to be eliminated and also wipes out the Buscetta clan and all its affiliates, dissolving their bodies in acid. In the meantime, Biagio unexpectedly receives a visit from Mangano, now in retirement, who, aware of his experience of the Corleonesi, places him in contact with the judges Falcone and Borsellino, who, co-ordinated by the Judge Caponnetto, have set up an anti-mafia pool. The judge’s intention is to unite all the mafia investigations and dig into the assets of the bosses. Biagio works alongside two valid police officers, Montana and Cassarà, and the hope of finally seeing Riina caught is revived in him. In the meantime, Falcone obtains the extradition of Masino Buscetta, captured in Brazil. Biagio, sent along with other police officers to collect the boss, saves his life on the plane. Once landed, Buscetta agrees to collaborate. Buscetta’ s revelations permit Falcone to issue 366 warrants, but the arrest which encourages Biagio more than any other is that of the member of parliament Vito Ciancimino. Falcone and Borsellino, isolated for reasons of security at Asinara, prepare the preliminary trial proceedings. In the meanwhile, Riina, worried, commissions his killer Scarpuzzedda to kill Montana, and Cassarà. Antonio, Biagio’s son, struck by the dramatic events, escapes from Rome to stay by his father’s side. Teresa, moved by his courage, follows him to Palermo and accepts to return to Biagio. It is 1986 when the maxi-trial against Cosa Nostra commences, an important trial which ended on 16 December 1987 with 2665 years of imprisonment and 19 life sentences, the foremost being the life sentencing of Riina, Provenzano and the allied bosses. While the judge reads the sentence out, Biagio realizes he is being followed, shoots the killers who want to catch him and take him to Totò, who has asked for him, but is seriously wounded.
