Over 47,000 sandhill cranes wintered in the Sulphur Springs and Gila River valleys this season. The cranes migrated in family units from the northern United States and Canada, and some flew from as far as Siberia. The annual Wings Over Willcox festival attracts people from around the world to southeastern Arizona to see the cranes. A popular viewing spot managed by Arizona Game and Fish, called Whitewater Draw, is a popular viewing area for people to observe the cranes. The cranes arrive in the area in mid-September to October, and they migrate north in mid-February to March.
