The summer monsoon in the Sonoran Desert accounts for about half of the region’s annual rainfall which is vital for the natural environment. The high temperatures and precipitation can lead to an explosion of life, from plants and insects to birds and mammals. The fig-eater beetle (Cotinis mutabilis), a member of the scarab beetle family, is one of the season’s most conspicuous species in the Tucson area.
