The Elegant Trogon is a brilliant bird that is usually associated with exotic locations in Mexico and Central America, but a population in southeast Arizona is attracting many admirers. The Tucson Audubon Society conducted surveys in May and June of 2018 and counted 183 of the birds in the Atascosa, Patagonia, Santa Rita, Huachuca, and Chiricahua mountains. Birding is a multibillion-dollar industry in the United States, and the elegant trogon's presence is helping local economies by drawing visitors who want to see them.
