Episode 339: Arizona Politicians in a Shifting Political Landscape

Also, October brings recognition of domestic violence and breast cancer.

This episode of Arizona Week takes a look at Arizona and events that made waves locally and nationally. Also, we check in on two important issues faced by women in communities around the world.

Sen. Jeff Flake announced on Tuesday he will not seek another term in 2018, with a harsh denunciation of President Trump and the administration. The Republican senator from Arizona did not announce any specific plans outside of serving the rest of his term.

Demonstrations continue to follow the Arizona Republic investigation into Gov. Doug Ducey’s pay raises for members of his executive staff. We talked with investigative reporter Craig Harris in Phoenix.

Ducey fired back on the investigation, with complaints that the story was lopsided and distorted the facts.

Arizona Sen. David Bradley joins us, to talk more about what Arizona legislators are prepared to do this upcoming session.

October is the time many recognize two important issues: domestic violence and breast cancer.

Someone dies in a domestic-violence-related incident every three days in Arizona, according to the Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence. There are nearly 40 shelters and services designed to help victims throughout the state. We checked in with the Forgach House in Sierra Vista, a home that has helped nearly 500 women and children from all over the country.

For the last year and a half, Arizona Public Media has tracked the story of Jaque Lamadrid, a young woman from Douglas diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 31. Nearly two years later, she’s a survivor, and much more.
