Local Skiers Flock to Tucson's Ski Resort

Mount Lemmon's Ski Valley open in spite of ongoing drought

The winter ski season seems to be off to a strong start in Arizona, despite an ongoing drought.

All three of the state's ski resorts are open, including Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley, the southernmost ski destination in North America. Graham Davies, area manager for Mount Lemmon Ski Valley, says the facility is small but with the right weather conditions the skiing and snowboarding can be excellent.

Conditions can be characterized as unpredictable, and there are times when there isn’t enough snow to open the slopes, but Davies says they make the most of what Mother Nature delivers.

“It’s definitely a boost for us," Davies says, "and having this many people on the mountain I’m sure is an economic boost for the businesses in Summerhaven also.”

Currently all runs are open with 26 to 28 inches of packed powder, and the slopes are open Thursday through Monday.
