AZ Illustrated Politics Episode, April 5, 2013

Roundtable topics: immigration reform, election reform, same-sex unions

Play the video above to watch AZ Illustrated Politics for Friday, April 5, as Jim Nintzel hosts former state legislators Paula Aboud and Jonathan Paton and Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce President Lea Marquez-Peterson, discussing:

IMMIGRATION REFORM soon will be formally debated as legislation in Congress after years of discussion. Marquez-Peterson said that Sen. Jeff Flake had told her group earlier this week that he thought a deal was possible. Paton said a lot of interests would need to be balanced for a deal to go through.

GUN CONTROL measures also will be considering in the Senate, via a proposal on expanded background checks on gun sales. Aboud said she hoped the Senate would require background checks on most gun sales, while Paton said he was skeptical that the new requirements would pass.

MEDICAID EXPANSION is slowing state budget negotiations, Aboud and Paton agreed. Marquez-Peterson said that the business community supported the expansion, while Paton said he thought lawmakers were more likely to agree to put the proposal on the ballot for voters to decide rather than put it up to a vote by the Legislature.
