Fat Man and Little Boy

This poignant film recreates America's secret effort to build the first nuclear bombs. Thursday at 8 p.m. on PBS 6.

In the remote desert of New Mexico, "The Manhattan Project" is materializing - America's secret effort to build the first nuclear bombs with the potential to end World War II. Oscar-winner Paul Newman stars as General Leslie Groves, the military man in charge of the massive project that will produce two weapons: "Fat Man" and "Little Boy." Dwight Schultz plays J. Robert Oppenheimer, the brilliant scientist attempting to bring the startling mission to fruition. Bonnie Bedelia, John Cusack, Laura Dern and Natasha Richardson co-star in this poignant film that recreates one of history's most compelling chapters - one that resulted in the mushroom-shaped specter that changed the world forever.
