An increasing number of people are looking for a “connection to the land” and one method that doesn’t require a lot of territory or money is gaining popularity. Residents in Arizona are experimenting with growing mushrooms in controlled environments. University of Arizona plant pathologist Barry Pryor is conducting research about the edible fungi as part of cooperative effort between different groups including the Arizona Department of Agriculture, the Arizona Mushroom Growers Association and UA’s student group, MycoCats. Pryor says residents should educate themselves about mushrooms before eating them, especially when picking them in the wild to avoid dangerous varieties.
