Audit Report: Arizona Public School Classroom Spending Declines

At 53.5%, it's lowest in the 16 years auditor general has tracked for district schools.

Public schools in Arizona spent 53.5 percent of their operating budgets in the classroom last school year, the lowest total in the 16 years it has been tracked, the Arizona auditor general reported this week.

The report said other spending went for administration, transportation and student support services, among other expenses.

Many districts had promised that much of their allotments from the passage of Proposition 123 would go toward teacher pay. The auditor general reported it could not determine whether districts followed through on that commitment.

The report said Arizona district schools spent about $3,300 less per student than the national average in the 2015-16 school year.
