In 1984, Jim Kolbe became the first republican to represent southern Arizona in the House of Representatives. He went on to win reelection ten times. In 2005, after announcing he would not seek a 12th term, Kolbe went to work as a fellow at the German Marshal Fund think tank and as a UA professor. President Barack Obama appointed Kolbe to the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations in September of this year. Kolbe discusses the importance of the CANAMEX trade corridor. He also ponders what he would do if he were in charge of border security and reflects on the Congressional habit of making earmarks.
