Gov. Doug Ducey appointed the next student regent for the Arizona Board of Regents Friday.

Anthony Rusk, a sophomore at the University of Arizona, said he's excited to represent the students of Arizona at the state level. While he's on the board, he said he wants to create policy that helps prepare students for college.

"I think one of my biggest focuses is definitely seeing what we can do in the K-12 pipeline to kind of help with — especially in math. Sixty percent of Arizona students are not adept at math — and seeing what we can do to make them ready for college," said Rusk.

Each year there are two student regents. They represent students at all three state universities and are part of the board to share the student perspective at meetings.

Rusk is currently the policy director for the Associated Students of the University of Arizona.

"When I found the position of policy director, I realized that I could have an effect on the education levels at the University of Arizona," said Rusk. "The policy director is like the student regent specific to UA, and the student regent is like the policy director for all three universities."

Rusk said will serve on the board for the next two years, beginning this summer. However, he won't be able to vote till his second year in the position. The second regent, Lauren L’Ecuyer, will be a voting member this year.
