Pima County announced Tuesday, that it is stopping the distribution of the Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine after the Arizona Department of Health Services and the federal government recommended a pause in the distribution of the vaccine.

The CDC and the FDA called for a halt in order to investigate possible links between the Johnson and Johnson vaccine and blood clots.

Pima County health officials said close to 25,000 doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine have been given since it arrived in the county on March 4.

The health department announced it will replace the Johnson and Johnson vaccine with the Moderna formulation.

The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines require two doses while the Johnson and Johnson vaccine requires only a single dose.

County officials said no appointments will be canceled.
