Salpointe Catholic High School has closed its campus temporarily after a two-alarm fire Sunday night caused major damage to one classroom wing.

The fire was reported to the Tucson Fire Department about 8:15 p.m. Sunday, and crews had it under control in about one hour.

"The 700 building, the English wing of campus, has suffered significant damage. It is going to be far more than just a clean up. As for the 300 and 400 wings of campus, those I believe are just going to require repair and cleanup to take care of the smoke and water damage," said Jennifer Harris, Director of Advancement at Salpointe.

Harris says the fire does not appear to be arson.

However, TFD spokesman Michael Colaianni says samples from the fire are being taken to a laboratory for chemical analysis.

The damaged 700 wing contains 6 classrooms, out of Salpointe's 70 learning spaces, Harris said.

With summer break underway, only a few sports activities were scheduled on the Salpointe campus for Monday, Harris said, and those have been suspended.

She added that Salpointe intends to resume classes on August 8 as scheduled.
