There are thousands of native and desert-adapted plants that can be used in Sonoran Desert gardens and the Baja fairy duster (Calliandra californica) is one of them. As its name states, this profuse bloomer is from Baja California, but there is also a native in the Tucson region, the desert fairy duster (Calliandra eriophylla) that is a recommended variety although it stays smaller and does not bloom as much as its Mexican cousin. Colorful, drought-tolerant and good for pollinators, experts recommend fairy dusters for Sonoran Desert gardens that want to conserve water in xeriscaping or other landscape settings.
