Alone: Teens In Solitary Confinement

Season 1, Episode 1 of 4

The United Nations calls it torture. But placing teens in solitary confinement has become standard practice in many U.S. prisons and jails. What's it like to spend months in "the box?" That's what they call isolation at Rikers Island in New York. CIR investigates the New York jail and visits an alternative model in Santa Cruz, California. Other stories reveal the latest in police high-tech surveillance techniques and capabilities; expose the sexual abuse that women farmworkers suffer on the job (using animation to protect their identities); and spotlight how a small village in the Philippines is using a pill to combat "empty net syndrome."
