Angels Sing, Libera in America

Episode 1 of 1

Angels Sing, Libera in America presents one of the world's most beloved boy choirs in a television concert recorded in Washington D.C. 's Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, North America's largest Catholic Church. It's the London-based 32-voice choir's second TV performance for PBS and their first to be sung in the U.S. Libera's 2013 program, Angels Sing, Christmas in Ireland, was one of the most watched Christmas shows on PBS during its December run. In this new performance, Libera's founder, arranger and conductor Robert Prizeman and producer Daniel Hart have created a concert which showcases Libera's soaring voices in a setting that magnificently reflects the original concept of the choir, with a sound that is both modern and ancient. While their white robes and angelic voices suggest a connection to Medieval monastery schools, the repertoire for Angels Sing, Libera in America is wide-ranging. From favorite hymns like "Be Still My Soul" and "Amazing Grace" to great American folk classics "Morning Has Broken" and "Wayfaring Stranger." The choir is accompanied by an 18-piece orchestra. A special Libera version of the Carole Bayer Sager/David Foster hit, "The Prayer," brings new resonance to the song when performed by the crystalline-pure voices of the choir's 9- to17-year old members. The huge volume of architectural space available in the 3000-seat Basilica presented both a challenge and a monumental blank canvas for the lighting of the performance which was created for Libera to magnificent effect by one of Europe's most prominent lighting designers, Jeroen Jans from the Netherlands.
