Rare Diseases, What Are They?: An Exploration Heal

Episode 1 of 1

From the producers of "Healthy Body, Healthy Mind" comes a new series of Exploration Health specials for prime time. In the U.S., a disease is considered rare if it is believed to affect fewer than 200,000 people. There are approximately 6,800 such diseases, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). So while each disease is rare, when considered together they affect nearly 30 million Americans or almost 1 in 10 people. And there are certain challenges that are shared by these patients and their families. In this one-hour special we will meet patients who are dealing with Gaucher Disease, MPS II, Chronic Granuomatous Disease and Hypoparathyroidism. We will also meet the physicians who work closely with them, to help manage life with these rare but often debilitating diseases.
