Retablo: Uncovering The Secrets

Season 1, Episode 4 of 4

For the first time in the United States, researchers have undertaken an extensive study of a 15th Spanish cathedral altarpiece, and in the process, have unlocked five hundred years of secrets involving art, literature, history and religion. RETABLO follows the journey of the altarpiece which survived earthquakes, war, trans-Atlantic voyages, years of storage in a WWII bunker and restoration. Using the latest technology, researchers see things which were not meant to be seen. Under-drawings reveal not only the inner workings of the artists workshops 500 years ago but tell who the artist was and why it was painted a certain way.
