PBS News Weekend

Season 8, Episode 26 of 99

Many best-selling books aimed at young adults are about fantasy, from the apocalyptic world of "The Hunger Games" to the teen vampires of "Twilight." But the latest blockbuster book deal for young readers between 12 and 18 years old is focused on a very real issue -- the shooting deaths of unarmed black teens by white police officers. The book is called "The Hate U Give," by first time novelist Angie Thomas, and after receiving positive reviews, it's been at the top of The New York Times young-adult bestseller list for the past six months. NewsHour Weekend Special Correspondent Alison Stewart recently caught up with Thomas in her hometown of Jackson, Mississippi, to discuss her work, her success and her journey.
