PBS News Weekend

Season 10, Episode 13 of 99

Americans pay more for prescription drugs than any country in the world, with billions in profits pouring in to the pharmaceutical industry each year. But more attention has recently been given to how middlemen might contribute to the high costs. Pharmacy benefit managers, or PBMs, act as third-party intermediaries between insurance plans, drug makers and pharmacies. PBMs say they save consumers money, but critics point to several PBM practices they say help keep drug costs high. NewsHour Weekend's Megan Thompson reports.
