PBS News Weekend

Season 12, Episode 48 of 99

For two decades, the small, Italian town of Riace was a beacon for immigrants from around the world fleeing poverty, disenfranchisement and war. And by welcoming migrants during the 2015 refugee crisis, Riace gained a reputation as symbol of tolerance. But three years after NewsHour Weekend first reported on how the town was welcoming immigrants with open arms, a political shift has turned Riace into a relative ghost town, after an Italian political party known for its anti-immigration message swept into power in local elections. Special correspondent Christopher Livesay reports.
