Arizona Illustrated

Season 8, Episode 8 of 40

King of Sting: Justin Schmidt is considered a connoisseur of pain to many. He has been stung by thousands of insects for science. Based on his research, he compiled the widely known “Schmidt Pain Scale for Stinging Insects,” based on his own sting experiences. Dr. Schmidt takes viewers into the field and shares his research and (painful!) methods from his laboratory. Pandemic Pets: Julius & Bailey: This short series features people whose pandemic experience was challenging but made more bearable and even enjoyable because of their loving pets. In this story we spend time with Julius Schlosburg and his cat Bailey who have been long-time collaborators and who made the most of quarantining by testing new photography techniques. Catalina State Park [2020 Encore Story]: Catalina State Park protects more than 5,000 acres north of Tucson but it might have been a housing development with a golf course and other amenities had it not been for a cooperative effort to save the land in the 1970s and 80s. Today, it is one of the most visited destinations in Arizona's State Parks and Trails system. The Wormhole: Inch By Inch is a Tucson based vermiculture business— they grow worms. We see the fascinating lives of worms through the eyes of Inch by Inch’s Michael Morse and Raul Garcia, two men who are passionate about worms and worm products.
