This Week on Arizona Illustrated… a special presentation of this year’s Emmy-winning stories! School In the Time of Covid [2021 Encore Story]: During the pandemic, some schools remained closed. Other schools opened with a mix of in-person and remote learning. We visit BASIS Charter School in Oro Valley, where the hybrid model was in operation in the fall, to get a sense of the physical and mental toll it has had on teachers, students and parents. The Flying Memorial [2020 Encore Story]: The B-17 Flying Fortress was a key strategic asset for the allied forces in Europe during World War II. Not many of these planes or the brave men who flew aboard them are left. Today the Liberty Foundation is offering the chance to experience what it’s like to take a flight on one of these historic warplanes. All About the Vaccines [2021 Encore Story]: Meet Deepta Bhattacharya. This Associate Professor at the University of Arizona’s Department of Immunobiology is deeply involved in research related to COVID-19. His lab is a leader in researching vaccines including their safety, efficacy, and role in getting us past the pandemic. Hearing Isaiah [2020 Encore Story]: With the health of our planet challenged by climate change, novel viruses, population growth, and pressure on natural resources, young environmental leaders will have their hands full guiding future generations toward a safer, cleaner, and more unified world. Isaiah Haley is good reason for hope and optimism. OSIRIS-REx - “Touch and Go” [2020 Encore Story]: On October 20, 2020, southern Arizonans and the world, watched as the OSIRIS-Rex spacecraft unfurled its robotic arm and briefly touched the asteroid Bennu. Arizona Illustrated was there to capture a unique behind-the-scenes look at every anxious and exhilarating moment that culminated with a successful capture of dust and pebbles from the surface of ancient asteroid more than 200 million miles from Earth.
