Nearly six years after retiring, Republican Jon Kyl accepted an appointment to the U.S. Senate to serve the remainder of the late Sen. John McCain's term. Christopher Conover got an update from the senator about his return to Congress and key issues that lawmakers must address.

"For some reason, the issues seem to remain the same. VA still has a problem. Still have a problem down on the border," Kyl said.

Kyl also discussed whether the senator still plans to step down at the end of the current congressional session.

In the home stretch to Election Day, candidates in closely watched races got a boost from some big names in politics.

President Donald Trump stumped for Republican Senate candidate Martha McSally in Mesa. Days later, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders appeared alongside Democratic gubernatorial candidate David Garcia at the University of Arizona. Political communications expert Kate Kenski explained the impact these types of rallies can have on the polls. She also discussed how voters' reactions to negative rhetoric has changed, and how female candidates are scrutinized differently from their male counterparts.

Politicians and pundits have all sounded off about higher turnout this election. Many are waiting to see if that includes greater participation from young voters. In past midterm elections, turnout among young millennials trailed voters belonging to older generations. Now as a new generation comes of age to vote, Arizona 360 heard from three politically active University of Arizona students about how they are encouraging their peers to cast their ballots.

Mexico is considered one of the deadliest countries for journalists. They face threats from drug cartels and corrupt government officials. Recently, the University of Arizona School of Journalism honored Carmen Aristegui, one of Mexico's best-known journalists, for her efforts to hold those involved in corruption accountable. Nancy Montoya learned more about how Aristegui views the role of the free press in her country.

Improving infrastructure comes up as an issue at all levels of government. In Pima County, about 2,200 miles of roads need repairs. Proposition 463 is a bond measure worth nearly half a billion dollars that would go toward fixes. Ana Olivares, director of the Pima County Department of Transportation, explained how the county assesses and prioritizes which areas need attention.
