Plus, the new president of the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on 2019 priorities.

The new year presents some familiar events, namely elections. This November, voters in Tucson will elect a new mayor. Democratic Mayor Jonathan Rothschild announced he would not seek a third term. His office, along with three city council seats, will appear on the ballot. Rothschild joined Lorraine Rivera in studio to discuss his decision to step down after serving for eight years, and what he sees as some of his achievements since taking office.

The Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce welcomed new leadership at the end of 2018. Chamber President and CEO Lydia Aranda discussed some of the chamber’s priorities for the new year. The Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce does not endorse political candidates, but Aranda says it pays close attention to local initiatives and their impact on commerce and chamber members.

With back-to-back election years, leaders of the Democratic and Republican parties Pima County are staying busy. Party chairs Alison Jones and David Eppihimer discussed lessons learned from the 2018 midterm election and what their focus will be in the coming years.

Democrats took control of the House of Representatives this week as the 116th Congress convened. The new majority includes Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick of Arizona’s 2nd Congressional District. She previously served as a representative of 1st Congressional District. Last month she joined Christopher Conover to talk about her return to Capitol Hill, her support for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, views on impeachment of President Trump and improving health care in Arizona.
