From the Vault: The Pioneer Hotel Fire
In December 1970 an early morning fire swept through the Pioneer Hotel in downtown Tucson leaving 29 dead and 27 injured. At the time, the Pioneer fire was called the worst tragedy in the city's modern history.

In December 1970 an early morning fire swept through the Pioneer Hotel in downtown Tucson leaving 29 dead and 27 injured. At the time, the Pioneer fire was called the worst tragedy in the city's modern history. Following the incident, a new city fire code required smoke detectors and sprinklers in all buildings four-stories and higher.
