Charles Mingus at 100

This year Arizona celebrated virtuoso jazz musician Charles Mingus’ 100th birthday with evenings of music and the dedication of The Mingus Memorial in Nogales, AZ.

Charles Mingus is one of the most influential figures in 20th-century American music. He was born in Nogales, AZ to a father who was a Buffalo Soldier stationed at Camp Little in 1922. He later became known as a virtuoso jazz bass player, band leader, and composer. Although Mingus' time in Nogales was brief, his Southern Arizona roots are still a sense of pride and celebration for the community. His 100th birthday was celebrated with concerts in Phoenix, Tucson, and Nogales by the quintet Mingus Dynasty before being finalized with the unveiling of the Charles Mingus Memorial in Nogales.

Charles Mingus es una de las figuras más influyentes de la música americana del siglo 20. Nació en Nogales, AZ a un padre que era un soldado búfalo estacionada en Camp Little en 1922. Después se dio a conocer bajista virtuoso de jazz, director de banda y compositor. Aunque la estancia de Mingus en Nogales fue breve, sus raíces del sur de Arizona siguen siendo razón de orgullo y celebración de la comunidad.
