This is a great time to encourage your child to thank the essential workers where you live.

There are helpers all around us, and we can be helpers, too! When we take time with our children to talk about the valuable work of community helpers (like firefighters, grocery store clerks, and bus drivers), we create important opportunities to express gratitude, even in difficult times.

Help your child understand how to be a helper with discussion questions like:

  • What makes someone a good brother or sister? Friend? Neighbor? Make a list of your child’s answers.

  • Throughout the week, go back to the list and ask “what could we do to be a helper today?"

  • Talk about a time you needed help with something. Explain what you did and what happened. Ask, “What can we do when we need help? Who can we ask to help us?”
