Each year, thousands of spectators and reenactors gather on Civil War battlegrounds across the country to commemorate events from that time. More than 3 million men fought in the Civil War and more than 620,000 lost their lives, more than died in World War I and World War II combined. The westernmost military engagements of the Civil War were fought in the New Mexico Territory, including the Battle of Picacho Pass. For more than 30 years, Civil War battles have been reenacted in the shadow of Picacho Peak, 40 miles north of Tucson.
