Listen:
Around 6,600 students will move out of UA housing over the next two weeks. University officials are asking students to donate items they leave behind rather than dumping them into the trash.
Dana Robbins-Murray, who works with residence life, said large donation bins will be put into every dorm Wednesday and students can drop off their unwanted clothes, books, electronics– even food.
"And then we work with a lot of non-profits in town to come and on a schedule, pick up the donated items in the bins," she said. "For example, this semester we’re working with Goodwill, the Community Food Bank, Salvation Army, Campus Pantry and Big Brothers Big Sisters."
Residence Life has run the donation drive for several years already, and Robbins-Murray said this year it has been expanded to off-campus apartment buildings as well.
The most common item that students typically leave behind?
"Stacks and stacks of microwaves," Robbins-Murray said.
