A rendering of the January 8th Memorial.
Tucson's January 8th Memorial Foundation
The state House Appropriations Committee has approved funding for Tucson’s January 8th Memorial.
The committee voted unanimously Wednesday to spend $2.5 million over five years for construction of the memorial. It will honor those killed and wounded in the 2011 shooting at then Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords constituents’ meeting.
The bill says the state money must be matched by funding raised by the sponsoring groups.
The January 8th Memorial Foundation plans to break ground this year in downtown Tucson’s Presidio Park.
