Episode 340: Southern Arizona Settles in For Warm, Dry Winter

A look at the effect of the climate on wildlife and communities.

On this episode of Arizona Week, we look at how our climate impacts the wildlife and people of Southern Arizona.

With the National Weather Service recording no rainfall for October at the Tucson Airport, where official measurements are taken, Southern Arizona gets ready for a warm, dry winter. Arizona Week checks in with a climatologist to understand what that tells us about the climate.

Warmer weather means multiple migrations of species, including one that heads straight for Southern Arizona in the winter: Snowbirds. Communities around Tucson cater to these winter visitors.

We visit the communities and individuals who find their way to the Old Pueblo to escape the cold climes of the north.

And what does winter visitors mean for Arizona’s economy? We check in with an economist and tourism officials to understand the impact of tourism.
