Internal Department of Homeland Security statistics obtained by CBS News showed that Border Patrol recorded about 54,000 apprehensions of migrants who crossed between legal ports of entry in September, the lowest in four years.
CBS News reported that U.S. immigration officials processed another 48,000 migrants in September at ports of entry, many who had secured appointments through a phone app that has a limited number of appointments to begin the asylum process.
The federal data for Arizona shows that the percentage of migrants crossing legally through a port of entry into Arizona has grown from just 6% a year ago to 22%. Across the southern border, the number of crossings at a port of entry has risen to nearly half, according to federal data released last month.
