On Saturday, PBS NewsHour Weekend examines the effects of poverty on children's mental health and cognitive development. Dr. Jack Shonkoff of Harvard's Center on the Developing Child says persistent adversity - what he calls "toxic stress" - can affect the architecture of the brain, especially in young children. Correspondent Megan Thompson reports from Connecticut. This story is part of "Chasing the Dream: Poverty and Opportunity in America," and the Rosalynn Carter Mental Fellowships for Health Journalism program.
