On Sunday, we meet Jefferson from Rocinha, one of Rio de Janeiro's poorest neighborhoods. Jefferson was able to attend school in part because his mother received a government stipend through Bolsa Familia, an anti-poverty program that has boosted enrollment. Jefferson dreams of finishing school and becoming a soccer player but the odds are stacked against him. On average Brazil's poorest children finish only four years of school, and in Rio's slum neighborhood, the drug trade beckons.
