One of the largest Native American tribes, the Cherokee Nation, is trying to eliminate the hepatitis C virus that affects 3.5 million Americans. In partnership with the University of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the tribe has undertaken an ambitious effort to screen all 300,000 of its members, whose prevalence of infection for the virus is five times the national rate, and treat them with new drugs that have proven 90 percent effective. On Sunday, NewsHour's Stephen Fee reports on how the study may contribute to stopping the disease in the broader population.
