While sanctions proponents point to the recent nuclear disarmament deal as proof of their effective pressure on Iran, some critics say sanctions have also hurt Iran-Americans in the United States. They point to civil penalties and criminal prosecutions brought against those unfamiliar with the complex rules, resulting in legal fees, fines, and even prison time.
