PBS News Weekend

Season 4, Episode 90 of 99

Starting this spring, 20,000 public high school students from low-income neighborhoods in New York City are getting an opportunity to see "Hamilton," which was nominated this week for a record 16 Tony Awards, including best musical. Before the performance, the show's creator, Lin Manuel Miranda, a former 7th grade teacher, and the rest of the cast personally engage with the students and listen to their homespun Hamilton-like, hip-hop versions of Colonial times. The theater visit follows classroom studies aiming to use the musical to encourage creativity and better engagement with American history. On Sunday, NewsHour's Saskia de Melker reports on this innovative collaboration inspiring inner-city youth.
