The Indian River Lagoon along Florida's East Coast is home to thousands of species of plants and animals, making it one of the most diverse waterways in North America. But the once-thriving ecosystem is now struggling to survive. In the last 60 years the number of people living around the lagoon has doubled, with many relying on septic tanks to treat their sewage. But upwards of 600,000 septic tanks are now leaching into tidal creeks and canal that flow into the lagoon and threatening the diverse ecosystem.
