PBS News Weekend

Season 6, Episode 23 of 99

A tech startup backed by $133 million in funding from Silicon Valley venture capitalists, wants to reinvent the way children learn in the United States by personalizing education. The for-profit school system called "AltSchool" now operates eight small private schools in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York - with ambitious plans to eventually license its program to public schools across the country. AltSchool's co-founder founder, a former Google executive, believes the techniques learned in the tech industry, like collecting personal data on users, can help transform education. NewsHour Weekend Special Correspondent Joanne Jennings reports from San Francisco. This story is part of American Graduate Day coverage, a public media initiative to address the high school dropout crisis.
