In 1522 the Victoria was the first ship to circumnavigate the globe and turned Ferdinand Magellan into one of the most celebrated explorers in history. But the real hero of the voyage was the little known Sebastian Elcano. Magellan had no intention of circling the globe, and when he was killed en route the command fell to Elcano, who made the decision to continue westward, which resulted in finding the western route to the Pacific and numerous other discoveries.
