LGBT people are more likely to be targets of hate crimes than any other minority group, according to the FBI's hate crime statistics. And many people within this often-marginalized community grow up without the resources or support they need to navigate societal isolation and hatred directed at them. One group of gay and lesbian youth in Washington, D.C. are finding solidarity through a gang called Check It, which was founded to literally fight back against discrimination.
