From Heart To Heart: Beethoven's Plea For Peace

Episode 1 of 1

History and music come together in the 2005 concert event, FROM HEART TO HEART: BEETHOVEN'S PLEA FOR PEACE. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic and four soloists under the direction of conductor Gilbert Levine perform Ludwig van Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, a work some consider the composer's greatest. The international quartet of soloists include America's beloved tenor, the late Jerry Hadley, Polish soprano Bozena Harasimowicz, Finnish mezzo Monica Groop and German basso Franz-Josef Selig. The piece, a stunning mass in five movements, calls for peace in a chaotic world. Filmed at the magnificent Cologne Cathedral in Germany, the program also features a special appearance by Pope Benedict XVI, who shares his personal thoughts on Beethoven's masterwork.
